About cocoa shell mulch
Cocoa shell mulch, also referred to as cocoa bean mulch, cocoa bean hull mulch, and cocoa mulch, is produced when cocoa beans undergo the roasting process, causing the shell to separate from the bean. This roasting procedure effectively sterilizes the shells, ensuring they are free from weeds and organic in nature. Many gardeners appreciate the delightful fragrance and appealing appearance that cocoa shell mulch brings to their gardens.
Benefits of cocoa shell mulch
Utilizing cocoa hulls in the garden comes with several advantages. Organic cocoa mulch, enriched with nitrogen, phosphate, and potash, and boasting a pH of 5.8, introduces valuable nutrients to the soil.
Incorporating cocoa hulls into the garden proves to be an excellent method for enhancing soil vitality, serving as an attractive top cover for both flower beds and vegetable patches. Furthermore, cocoa bean hulls contribute to moisture retention in garden beds and naturally suppress weed growth, eliminating the necessity for herbicides containing harmful chemicals.
Garden applications
Cocoa Shell serves as an exceptional garden mulch and soil conditioner. The majority of this product finds its use as a garden mulch, although some gardeners opt to incorporate it into sandy or clay soils due to its effectiveness in retaining moisture and improving the texture of heavy soils. When used as a mulch, it acts as a protective top layer for various beds, typically applied post-planting. Planting through the mulch is a straightforward process.
How to use cocoa shells
Using Cocoa Shell is a simple and straightforward task. After planting your bedding or other items, clear away visible weeds and spread the cocoa shell to a depth of 5cm (2"). Ensure an even distribution using your hands, a rake, or a spade. It's crucial to provide a sufficient 5cm (2") depth for optimal functionality, so don't be sparing!
Once the cocoa shell is in place, water it in using a hose, sprayer, or watering can – approximately one watering can per bag. This process activates a natural binding agent that binds the shells together, creating a loosely knitted porous mat. This mat allows water to penetrate, enables bulbs and plants to grow, and effectively hinders weed emergence while reducing water evaporation from the soil surface.
It's essential not to get the mulch overly wet. When cocoa shells become excessively wet and aren't given the opportunity to dry out between waterings, it creates a favorable environment for pests to be drawn to the damp soil and mulch.
